Description

How can a carton of eggs—or a tub of plain yogurt—transform your math instruction? As staple grocery prices rise and food affordability influences political elections, it’s essential to equip students with the skills to understand the economic realities behind the meals they eat. Educators can make learning relevant through real world contexts like meal planning and grocery budgeting. This workshop offers a meaningful way for students to see math in action while strengthening their culinary, financial and social literacy skills.

Participants will leave with 5 delicious, classroom-ready food-based activities designed to guide students to calculate the true cost of the ingredients, unit price comparisons, understanding numbers on Nutrition Facts labels, converting measurements, estimating totals, and building shopping lists within a set budget.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, educators will be able to:

  1. Design interdisciplinary learning activities that connect food budgeting with real-world socio-economics underlying the meals they eat.
  2. Infuse math lessons with practical food-based applications including grocery budgeting and food price comparisons using age appropriate math functions — such as:
    • Addition and subtraction
    • Multiplication and division
    • Working with fractions
    • Estimating totals and rounding
    • Converting units (ounces to cups, pounds to ounces, etc.)
  3. Incorporate nutrition education into lessons to help students understand how smart food decisions, budgeting, and cooking skills support healthy habits.
This workshop draws from evidence-based practices utilized in Teen Battle Chef (TBC) and SYEP-TBC programming developed by FamilyCook Productions.
